    This online course fulfills the theory instruction portion of the Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements for a Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Endorsement, in compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) standards.  Designed for CDL trainees pursuing a Hazmat Endorsement, this training must be assigned and administered by a provider listed on the FMCSA's Training Provider Registry (TPR).

    The curriculum includes 12 mandatory modules covering essential topics such as hazardous materials regulations, loading/unloading procedures, emergency response, safety permits, and route planning.  Trainees must complete each module with a score of 80% or higher to satisfy the theory requirement.

    Prerequisite: Students must have a current CDL before registering for this course.

    Course Learning Outcomes:

    • Identify and apply federal regulations and operational requirements for transporting hazardous materials, including proper labeling, placarding, and shipping documentation.
    • Demonstrate understanding of emergency response procedures, including immediate actions, reporting protocols, and post-incident responsibilities.
    • Explain and comply with loading and unloading procedures for hazardous materials, including specific requirements for bulk packages and cargo tanks.
    • Evaluate and plan appropriate hazmat transportation routes, considering tunnel restrictions, highway-rail grade crossings, and required safety permits.
    • Inspect and operate emergency equipment associated with hazardous material transport, including fire suppression systems, shut-off valves, and tire safety checks.
    • Differentiate between hazardous materials permitted and prohibited on passenger vehicles, and describe associated operational safety measures.

The certification exam covers essential skills including safety, machine setup, material handling and basic control panel functions. Those who pass the exam earn a Haas Certificate of Competency, nationally recognized by employers and a strong foundation for advanced CNC certifications.
