This online course fulfills the theory instruction portion of the Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements for a Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Endorsement, in compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) standards. Designed for CDL trainees pursuing a Hazmat Endorsement, this training must be assigned and administered by a provider listed on the FMCSA's Training Provider Registry (TPR).
The curriculum includes 12 mandatory modules covering essential topics such as hazardous materials regulations, loading/unloading procedures, emergency response, safety permits, and route planning. Trainees must complete each module with a score of 80% or higher to satisfy the theory requirement.
Prerequisite: Students must have a current CDL before registering for this course.
Course Learning Outcomes:
- Identify and apply federal regulations and operational requirements for transporting hazardous materials, including proper labeling, placarding, and shipping documentation.
- Demonstrate understanding of emergency response procedures, including immediate actions, reporting protocols, and post-incident responsibilities.
- Explain and comply with loading and unloading procedures for hazardous materials, including specific requirements for bulk packages and cargo tanks.
- Evaluate and plan appropriate hazmat transportation routes, considering tunnel restrictions, highway-rail grade crossings, and required safety permits.
- Inspect and operate emergency equipment associated with hazardous material transport, including fire suppression systems, shut-off valves, and tire safety checks.
- Differentiate between hazardous materials permitted and prohibited on passenger vehicles, and describe associated operational safety measures.
