  • Basic Dog Obedience (Libby)

    Learn the basics of dog obedience, how to properly administer handler techniques and understand fundamental dog psychology. This class will present opportunities to handle dogs in a variety of situations and distractions. Handlers will be given the opportunity to take the AKC Canine Good Citizen test (a nationally recognized dog socialization test at the last class. 

    Class will meet on Sundays in Libby outdoors at the Fred Brown Riverside Pavilion. Dates may change depending on weather conditions. Dress accordingly.

    The first class meeting is student-only (no dogs). Please bring your dog’s vaccination records. One dog per student.

    Explore the latest discoveries in animal behavior, neuroscience and medical imaging to understand why our beloved pets do what they do. Bring your own perplexing pet behavior stories to share, and then practice identifying the underlying motives of canine behavior using evidence-based, positive-reinforcement strategies for low stress behavior adjustment.

    Nortwest Montana has a world-class, rich and diverse array of birds. With lighthearted fun, special guest instructors, local videos and PowerPoints, this course will provide background on the behavior, form, function, value and conservation of birds—with a more in-depth look at several species of special interest that are native to Northwest Montana. The course will emphasize identification of 136 (or more) common birds by both sight and sound in six habitats, and an opportunity to practice those skills during outdoor experiences, including 3 field trips to local birding hotspots and a live birds of prey presentation. Students will also be provided with information on additional birding resources, both local and online.

    Explore the subtle communication between horse and human through mindful observation, grooming and leading. Ground activities highlight presence, emotional awareness and trust while revealing how our inner state influences connection. Slowing down and attuning to the horse encourages new ways of relating with openness, calm and respect.

    Discover how dogs use body language and vocalization to communicate with each other and with us. Class explores the signals dogs rely on and offers practical guidance on how we can adjust our own posture and tone of voice to communicate more clearly in return. While the class builds on the concepts from “Why Does My Dog Do That?” there are no prerequisites and everyone is welcome.
